 Exercise [14.32]c
I mentioned before that I expected that an index-free approach would provide the simplest solution to this problem. I have finally managed to solve it with this approach. It is interesting in that unlike my previous solution, this one is purely algebraic and requires no covariant derivatives or Riemann tensors.

That's an elegant proof: not only is index free but gets the point as a straightforward consequence of another result, interesting by itself.
